About the Conference

Held biennially since 2007, Red Pencil is one of the top editing conferences in the country and the largest specifically for editors on the West Coast, with over 200 attendees from the Pacific Northwest, California, Canada, and beyond. A learning and networking forum for members of the Northwest Editors Guild, colleagues, and friends in the editing community, this one-day conference hosts sessions that speak to both freelancers and in-house editors, covering a variety of professional topics from plain language editing to publishing trends and more.

Conference Theme—Framing Our Future: Perspectives on a Changing Industry

This year’s conference will explore how editors can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our industry during this time of rapid change. With an inspiring keynote and a full day of sessions led by experts in our field, we'll examine the myriad challenges and opportunities facing editors today. These include the dizzying growth of AI, rising censorship and intellectual property theft, and preserving the diversity and value that is vital to our industry. Attendees will be energized, inspired, and empowered with practical tools to grow their skills and businesses.

Red Pencil Virtual Conference Options

Following our successful virtual options in 2023, this year we are offering options for live-streamed conference attendance and access to session recordings after the conference. Explore the ticket options for in-person attendance, virtual attendance, and access to conference recordings, and choose the ticket option that is best for you. Find out more about virtual ticket options on the Registration Information page.

Health and Safety Measures

The health and safety of everyone present at in-person conference events is our top priority.  If you are attending in-person, find recommended health and safety measures to take before and during the conference on our Health & Safety Policy page.

Transportation

Location

The 2025 conference will be held at the Lynnwood Event Center (3711 196th St SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036), which is located just off I-5, 17 miles north of Seattle.

We are excited to be hosting the conference at this location again, which is now accessible by light rail!

Driving directions

Driving directions are available on the Lynnwood Event Center website.

Parking

The Lynnwood Event Center offers 400 complimentary spaces in parking lots adjacent to the building’s main entrance. We kindly ask that you do not park in spaces marked “No Convention Center Parking” as these spaces are reserved for retail tenants and guests.

Transit

Ride the light rail to and from the Lynnwood City Center Station, located less than a mile from the Lynnwood Event Center. The light rail connects Lynnwood directly to downtown Seattle and SeaTac Airport, with trains running every 8–10 minutes. From the station, you can walk, take a quick rideshare, or hop on a local bus to reach the Lynnwood Event Center in just minutes.

The Lynnwood Transit Center, located less than a mile southwest of Lynnwood Event Center, is served by many Sound Transit and Community Transit bus routes.

Carpooling and Room Sharing

Members can use the Guild's discussion list to connect with other editors about carpooling and room-sharing options. See Discussion List How-to for assistance if needed.

Flights

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is the primary regional airport and is served by most national and international carriers. It is located 29 miles south of the Lynnwood Event Center.

Paine Field is located eight miles north of the Lynnwood Event Center and served by a small number of Alaska Air flights from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Alaska.

Pre- and Post-Conference Gatherings

Although the day-long conference is currently the only in-person, Guild-sponsored weekend event, we've identified nearby eateries so you can plan your own pre- or post-conference functions with colleagues and friends. (The Red Pencil coordinating committee does not necessarily endorse any of these establishments; for a more extensive list, see Lynnwood Tourism Where to Eat or Lynnwood Restaurant Showcase.)

Accessibility

The Northwest Editors Guild is committed to hosting a conference that is welcoming and enjoyable for every attendee. If you have an accessibility question, concern, or request, please reach out to conference@edsguild.org.

While attending the conference, if you have any questions or requests related to accessibility, please see the volunteers at the registration table or at the Guild information table. The Lynnwood Event Center provides permanent access accommodations under the guidance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you need temporary auxiliary aids or a wheelchair, those can be acquired at the front desk, located on the upper level.

Presentations will be amplified, and some front-of-room seating will be reserved for people who are hard of hearing or have low vision. These seats will be designated by “Reserved: Accessible Seating” signs. Live-streamed sessions will include live captioning, which means AI-generated captions that are not edited for accuracy. Recorded sessions will be captioned with edited captions.

Name Tag Stickers

“No photos” stickers on name tags identify attendees who do not want to be photographed. Back-of-head shots in groups are fine, but otherwise please respect their request.

We will provide colored stickers so that everyone can indicate their comfort level with physical contact: red means no contact, please; yellow signals elbow contact or handshakes are okay; and green means hugs are welcome. Please notice and respect attendees’ choices.

Create Access

To help make the conference inclusive and enjoyable for all attendees, we request that you:

  • Move mindfully. Be aware of the people around you.

  • Use middle seats and make a new friend whenever you can. Leave the front and side seats open for late arrivals and those needing easily accessible seating.

  • Take the space you need to fully participate. Ask for what you need.

  • Avoid making assumptions about others’ needs, visible or invisible. Instead, ask what you can do to make someone’s day better.
